Msgr. Spiers Awards 2024
Four students have been honored with the Monsignor Spiers Service Award for the 2023-24 school year, announced as a highlight of Catholic Schools Week.
Congratulations to Jennifer Daniels, Danny Muldoon, Lana Peters and Sofia Siles!
The Monsignor Spiers Service Awards are named after Monsignor Edward Spiers, the founding principal when Bishop Watterson opened its doors in 1954. Monsignor Spiers served as principal at Bishop Watterson from 1953-1971. A tradition that goes back to 1996, these awards are presented by Student Council to honor students who have performed outstanding service in both the school and the community. The Msgr. Spiers Awards honor individuals who have upheld his commitment to the Christian values of service and education.
Jennifer Daniels, Class of 2024, St. Michael School & Parish
Jennifer has accumulated close to 200 hours above the Sophomore Service requirement through her volunteer work with local Special Olympic programs, soccer camps, basketball camps and swimming programs as well as with the Christ Child, an organization that makes and delivers bundles of baby necessities to local hospitals. She remains a committed volunteer with Holy Family Soup Kitchen as well as St. Michael and St. Joan of Arc Parish. At Bishop Watterson Jennifer is a member of the girls soccer team, Morgan’s Message Club and she founded the ASL Club.
Daniel Muldoon, Class of 2024, Jones Middle School
Danny has amassed almost 400 hours volunteering as a camp counselor with the YMCA’s Camp Fitch summer camps. Locally, Danny assists at Ohio State home football games by assisting with bike parking, and he coordinates initiatives for local food pantries with the Bishop Watterson swim team. At Bishop Watterson Danny is the president of the Business Club, Vice President of the Investment Club and a member of the cross-country, swim, and track and field teams.
Lana Peters, Class of 2024, St. Brendan School & Parish
Lana has contributed more than 160 volunteer hours above the Sophomore Service requirement at Columbus Humane Society, Habitat for Humanity and the Columbus Cake Celebrations. Additionally, she recently participated in the Cranks Creek mission trip, is an active volunteer at St. Brendan Parish as well as the Ronald McDonald House and she makes valentines for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. At Bishop Watterson Lana is a Student Ambassador and varsity cheerleader and she is a member of Student Council, Spirit Committee and the varsity track and field team.
Sofia Siles, Class of 2024, St. Michael School & Parish
Amassing close to 300 hours above the Sophomore Service Requirement, Sofia is active as a volunteer with local Special Olympics programs, the Columbus Buddy Walk, St. Michael Parish and St. Joan of Arc Parish, and helps as an assistant coach for girls basketball, volleyball and softball at St. Michael school. At Bishop Watterson she is the Student Council vice president, a Student Ambassador, and a member of the varsity volleyball and softball teams. She is also a member of Business Club, St. Vincent de Paul Club, Morgan’s Message Club, ASL Club and Spirit Committee.
