The Soaring Eagle Award was created by the Athletic Department in 2018 with the purpose of encouraging our students to be multi-sport athletes at Bishop Watterson. It is our belief that for our teams to reach their full potential we need student athletes who are willing to play more than one sport. Furthermore, according to recent research, focusing on one sport can have several adverse effects. In addition, college coaches favor multi-sport high school athletes. Lastly, we want our athletes to focus on the countless benefits that exist by playing faith/education/school based sports. There are few memories more cherished than representing your school with pride in the athletic arena.
To qualify for the Soaring Eagle Award a student athlete must accumulate at least eight varsity letters during four years of athletic competition here at Bishop Watterson. There are a couple of exceptions. First, cheerleading letters do not count for the Soaring Eagle Award primarily because our cheer squad here is a non-competitive team. Second, the Athletic Department discourages participating in two sports in one season with rare exceptions. The expectation is for an athlete to commit to one team per season and the academic rigor here at BWHS. Only one varsity letter per season will be counted toward this award.
