Msgr. Spiers Awards 2025

Msgr. Spiers Awards 2025

Four students have been honored with the Monsignor Spiers Service Award for the 2024-25 school year, announced today as a highlight of Catholic Schools Week.

Congratulations to Marissa Fogt, Angie Hanson, Tad White and Sophia Reing-Hurley!

The Monsignor Spiers Service Awards are named after Monsignor Edward Spiers, the founding principal when Bishop Watterson opened its doors in 1954. Monsignor Spiers served as principal at Bishop Watterson from 1953-1971.

These awards are a tradition that goes back to 1996. They are presented by Student Council to honor students who have performed outstanding service in both the school and the community. The Msgr. Spiers Awards honor individuals who have upheld his commitment to the Christian values of service and education.

Marissa Fogt, Class of 2025, St. Michael School & St. Joan of Arc Parish

Throughout her high school career, Marissa has recorded almost 300 hours volunteering with the Hilliard Special Olympics Program. She is a very familiar face with the organization, helping with the OSU Special Olympics Summer Olympic Games, assisting with basketball, soccer, bowling, track and field, swimming and pickleball. Recently, Marissa helped launch a brand-new initiative to recruit future athletes and promote acceptance in the community – the Special Olympics Young Athletes.  Special Olympics Young Athletes offers inclusion-based sports opportunities for children three to seven years of age. In a short time 50 young children have joined the program. This past summer Marissa volunteered as a Miracle League Buddy, helping children with disabilities excel on the softball field. In addition to her service work, Marissa holds down a part time job at the Dublin Recreation Center.

Angela Hanson, Class of 2025, St. Brigid School & Parish

Angela “Angie” Hanson has a very diverse service record – accumulating more than 500 hours of service above the Sophomore Service requirement. She is an active volunteer with Damascus – helping nanny, assisting as an aide for campers, and assisting with their retreat program. Angie has participated in two Cranks Creek Mission trips, focusing on volunteering in the local soup kitchen and facilitating the Christmas Toy Drive. Angie has volunteered countless hours with Meals on Wheels, The Villas of St. Therese Assisted Living, Elmvue Group Home and she regularly tutors a student with special needs. At her parish, St. Brigid, Angie leads the monthly St. Brigid Prayer Club and is a youth camp and youth group volunteer. At Bishop Watterson Angie has served as a leader for Kairos and Telos retreats and a senior leader for the Freshman Day of Reflection and she has assisted with events such as Open House and Trick or Treat.

Sophia Reing-Hurley, Class of 2026, Immaculate Conception School & Parish

Accumulating more than 190 volunteer hours during her three years at Bishop Watterson, Sophia has been an active volunteer at Bishop Watterson, St. Agatha, and Immaculate Conception. Sophia is a co-leader with Seeds of Caring, a nonprofit that focuses on the helping of younger kids serving the community.  She annually volunteers with the People in Need Christmas Clearinghouse, The Vine High School Missionary Youth Group and the Clintonville Community Resource Center. Additionally, Sophia participates in the annual December Cranks Creek Mission Trip.  At BWHS Sophia is actively involved in the Alzheimer’s Club and theatre program, and she is a member of the cross country and gymnastics teams as well as a Student Ambassador.

Theodore White, Class of 2025, St. Michael School & Parish

Amassing 240 hours above the Sophomore Service Requirement, Theodore “Tad” White is an incredibly active volunteer with the Worthington Food Pantry. Weekly on Saturday mornings you can find Tad receiving and logging deliveries, stocking donations, and distributing goods to the families served in the Worthington Community. Recently Tad was given the responsibility of training new volunteers and will frequently work the front end of the shop during a staff shortage. For Tad, volunteering provides an outlet to interact with and assist others. Through his service, Tad has found a sense of drive and purpose that not only brings out his best, but the best in others. At Bishop Watterson, Tad is a member of the National Honor Society, Environmental Club, and Foreign Policy Club.
