2026 Homecoming Honoree
Bishop Watterson’s 2026 Homecoming Honoree was introduced to the student body by our Student Council leaders, President Carly Law and Vice President Brenna Conway. Following is the introduction:
This morning we are proud to recognize our 2026-2027 Homecoming Honoree, Dr. Douglas DiOrio. If you are an athlete at Watterson, then you might very well recognize Dr. DiOrio or have even consulted him for medical advice. That is because Dr. DiOrio is one of our onsite physicians. Dr. DiOrio volunteers countless hours to our athletic programs because he feels that it is important to give back to a community that did so much for him.
Dr. DiOrio was a student at OLP before attending high school at Bishop Watterson. He then went on to complete his undergraduate at Notre Dame (where he was part of the national championship football team). Dr. DiOrio finished his doctorate at The Ohio State University. Some of his notable accomplishments include serving as team doctor at OSU, lead physician at Ohio Wesleyan University, and team physician for the Columbus Crew and United Football League’s Aviators.
Watterson made a huge impact on Dr. DiOrio’s life by preparing him for future academics and instilling lifelong values. Dr. DiOrio said that Watterson showed him the importance of volunteering and giving back to the community whenever he can. If you know Dr. DiOrio, these are traits that are easily seen. Everyone that he has encountered at Watterson has helped guide him in his decisions throughout his life and makes him want to be a part of the community. The impact Watterson made on him, made him want to give back to that same community. He said he would recommend Watterson to anyone who wants to invest in a place where your child will learn to be a good human being and be prepared for all future academic challenges. These are some of the many reasons Dr. DiOrio sent his children here.
Dr. DiOrio is most proud of the small role he has played in the student success here at Watterson. He gets so much joy out of seeing the students grow and their interactions with others along the way. Dr. DiOrio takes so much pride in associating with Watterson and the greatness that comes out of it. His favorite memory during his time at Watterson is being onsite as the physician to be able to watch his son win the State Championship in basketball.
Dr. DiOrio’s advice to the students at Watterson is:
- Appreciate what you are gaining from attending Watterson
- Enjoy every moment, including the challenges
- Fully engage in Watterson – you get out what you put in
- 4 years goes quickly, so get involved and enjoy it!
Thank you, Dr. DiOrio for all of the ways you have contributed to the Watterson community. We truly appreciate your continued commitment to our students and school!
