National Merit and Commended Scholars 2018

Four Bishop Watterson students have been named National Merit Semifinalists or Commended Scholars based on their performances on the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

Gabe Vidal (St. Michael School/St. Paul Parish) is a National Merit Scholar. He is a member of the Anime and Nintendo Clubs at Bishop Watterson and participated in a game design camp at Shawnee State University this summer. He plays piano and volunteers at Buddy Up Tennis. In addition, he participated in Gospel Road, a week-long mission experience serving those in need, in 2015, 2016 and 2017. He plans to major in computer science in college.

Meggie Davis (St. Brigid School and Parish) is a Commended Scholar. A member of the National Honor Society, she is also a member of the Paso A Paso Club and mock trial Team. She has served as a volleyball team manager and played on the team in addition to being a member of the BWHS diving team. She has volunteered at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and Meals on Wheels. Meggie also participated in a mission trip to Guatemala with International Samaritan. She plans to major in pre-medicine in college.

Erin Dawson (Immaculate Conception School and Parish) is a Commended Scholar. She is the flute section leader for the Bishop Watterson Marching Band and also participates in Concert Band and Worship Choir. Erin is a Student Ambassador, a member of the National Honor Society, does Irish Dance and volunteers on the Whetstone Library Teen Advisory Board. She also volunteers as a BWHS Honor Band aide and as an experimental design coach for Immaculate Conception’s Science Olympiad team. She plans to major in Middle Childhood Education at Bowling Green State University.

Lizzy Steffensmeier (St. Andrew School and Parish) is a Commended Scholar. She is a BWHS Student Ambassador, a member of Business Club, a member of the varsity golf team. She will be a member of the mock trial team this year and is a committee member of the Northwest Civic Association. In addition, she volunteers at Meadow Park Children’s Center and has organized a book drive to start a library in Zambia. Lizzy plans to go to law school after completing her undergraduate degree.
