Be The Match Swab Event

Attention Bishop Watterson High School students, parents, alumni, siblings, and friends between the ages of 18-44:

Want to help save a life?

A bone marrow donor drive is being held on Thursday, April 19  from 11:00 a.m.. to 6:00 p.m. for Be The Match, an organization that connects potential bone marrow donors to patients with life-threatening blood diseases.  A senior BWHS football player is helping to organize this campaign after learning about a teammate’s inability to find a bone marrow donor match in his battle against leukemia.  We can help others just like him.

If you are between the ages of 18-44, please consider becoming a bone marrow donor.  It will take about 10 minutes of your time, and you could save a life!

BWHS Students: You will have many opportunities on Thursday April 19 to participate in the Swab Drive. You will receive an email at your school account with instructions to participate.

Parents, older siblings, alumni and friends:

Between 11 am and 3:30 p.m.: Park in Visitor Parking and enter the school through the Cooke Road doors. Check in at the Main Office and proceed to the Old Gym Lobby to participate in the Swab Drive.

Between 3:30 and 6:00 p.m.: Park anywhere in the school lot and come directly to the Old Gym Lobby doors to participate in the Swab Drive.

OR:

REGISTER ONLINE ANYTIME via this link:  https://join.bethematch.org/bwhs  You can also use this link to gather more information about joining the registry and how bone marrow donation works.

What’s involved?

  • Being between the ages of 18 and 44
  • A commitment to help someone if needed by donating blood stem cells or bone marrow
  • Completing a health questionnaire
  • Providing contact information so Be The Match can get in touch with you if you are a match for someone
  • Providing a DNA sample via a mouth swab in person or via mail (the kit can be mailed to you)

Currently only 1 in 470 people on the registry are a match for someone in need. The more people who get on the registry to donate bone marrow, the better the chance to save someone’s life!  It could be you!
