The Rhythm Syndicate is a performance group that uses the instruments from the modern competitive marching percussion family, as well as members of modern Color Guard to add a heightened level of visual interpretation to the music. The group marches drill and plays music indoor in a gym, and the music, drill and visual elements are written to depict a story, emotion or idea. These shows are also competitive in nature, with the different elements being assessed by three different judges in three captions. These captions are Music Performance (how well we play), Visual Performance (how well we march and do the guard work), and General Effect (a combination of the other two captions). The Rhythm Syndicate competes against groups from other High Schools around the state of Ohio, as well as from Indiana and Michigan in two different circuits: The Ohio Indoor Performance Association (OIPA), and The Mid-East Performance Association (MEPA).
This year, the groups show is titled “Ah-Ha,” and is about the path of discovery to many different “Ah-Ha” moments. The music and visual design are written specifically for the group by Jeff Evans (music) Jim Swanson (class of ’88: Head Director, drill and overall design) and Maddie McAllister (class of ’12: Color Guard work). Alum Bill Hurley, (class of ’89) is also on staff as a visual tech. The group is comprised of 27 members from Bishop Watterson High School, and one eighth grade member.
Past accomplishments include numerous first, second and third in class placements at various OIPA and MEPA regional competitions, and were the 2010 OIPA Bronze medalists in Class Independent A as well as the 2011 OIPA Silver Medalist, and 2011 MEPA Bronze Medalist in Class Independent A.
