Celebrating the Right to Life: Women’s Care Center Visited BWHS

Kathleen Gibbons ’85, Outreach Director for the Kinder Women’s Care Center (935 East Broad Street, Columbus 43205, 614-251-0200), visited with Bishop Watterson’s Christian Leadership Classes.

Gibbons told anecdotal stories about clients ranging in age from teenagers to adults, and she spoke about the center’s history as well as services the agency offers. Students learned the center is always looking for volunteers who can help with unpacking donated items, sorting and tagging baby clothes, fundraising, and providing childcare for clients during counseling.

Students also had the opportunity to hold life-size fetus models at various stages of development and they were given baby bottles to help the center by collecting change. Stickers on the bottle read, "Fill this baby bottle with your SMALL CHANGE to make a BIG CHANGE for our moms and babies." The students reportedly embraced this project, many filling the bottle by the end of the day.

The Kinder Women’s Care Center, which served more than 2,000 women in Columbus in 2010, has been successful in its primary goal of helping women choose life, with 95% of those served by counseling and ultrasound services choosing life for their babies. The center also provides parenting classes and a program to provide the items needed by babies such as cribs, car seats, clothing and diapers. In 2010 the center distributed more than 500,000 diapers.

Many thanks to Kathleen Gibbons and current BWHS parent Mar Frommeyer for coordinating this visit.
