Ron Shay Alumni Basketball Tournament
The 26th annual Ron Shay Alumni Basketball Tournament, which has become a holiday tradition for many alumni, was held on Sunday, December 18 at Bishop Watterson. Sixteen teams participated in three brackets this year.

Winners of this year's tournament were the classes of 1991, 2000, 2006, and 2014.
Participants and fans watched football and were treated to pizza, wings, and refreshments in Dominican Hall following the games.

Buckeye Tailgate FUNdraiser

Our first-ever Buckeye Tailgate FUNdraiser was held on Saturday, October 15 at BWHS. Alumni, parents, and friends gathered and watched the Buckeyes' exciting win over Wisconsin while supporting the Athletic and Alumni Departments. A silent and live auction, a raffle, corn hole, and giant Jenga were also part of the fun evening.

Monsignor Kenneth Grimes Men's Night was held on April 10, 2016

Approximately 130 men were in attendance for Men's Night which was held in honor of our beloved Monsignor Kenneth Grimes on Sunday, April 10 at St. Andrew's. Alumni Director Scott Manahan was the master of ceremonies and Jack Park, an Ohio State historian, was the guest speaker. Monsignor Grimes' nephew, Leo '73 ran the silent auction and Advancement Council president Shawn O'Reilly '88 spoke to the group about matching scholarships. Guests were treated to a steak dinner catered by Berwick. Proceeds from this event benefit BWHS students through scholarships. The Alumni and Development Departments are thankful for all who attended or contributed to the success of this event in any way.
















Monsignor John Cody March Madness Table Tennis Tourney
A record number of teams competed in our annual Monsignor John Cody March Madness Table Tennis Tournament. The duo of Phil Diaz and Jeff Woods won the coveted first place trophy.

Ron Shay 2015 Alumni Basketball Tournament 


Over 130 participated in our annual Ron Shay Alumni Basketball Tournament on December 27, 2015.
Teams were divided into three brackets.
Division I:     "Legends" (1958 to 1974), 1975,1980,and 1991
Division II:    1993, 1994-1996, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, and 2005
Division III:    2006, 2007, 2009, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, and 2015
Winners were as follows:
Division I:   1991
Division II:   2003
Division III:  2009





Wings, pizza, and refreshments were served in Dominican Hall following the games.

The Alumni Department would like to thank event chair Steve Devlin '96 for his time and commitment to making this tournament a great success. Bishop Watterson Legends Golf Classic

Our annual Bishop Watterson Legends Golf Classic was a great success. This golf outing was held on a beautiful Sunday, September 20th, at the Golf Club of Dublin. Winners of this year's Golf Classic were Keith Jackson, Jordan Wagner, Scott Moore, and Mike Ezell, guests of corporate sponsor Facility Source. Awards were given for first and second-place teams, longest drive, longest putt, and closest to the pin. Many raffle items were given away as well.

The Legends Golf Classic honors the legacies of two great Bishop Watterson coaches and administrators: Tom Scholl and Ron Shay. Proceeds from this event will be used as support for scholarships.

The Alumni Department recognized members of the 1995, 2005, and 2009 State Championship Field Hockey teams at halftime of the BWHS vs. Grove City boys' basketball game on Saturday, January 31, 2015. 2015 Shay Alumni Basketball Tournament

Eighteen teams gathered on Sunday, December 21 for our annual Shay Alumni Basketball Tournament, which has become a holiday tradition for many BWHS alumni.

The competition was fierce and highlights of the day included the Class of 2009 edging out the Class of 2014 in the Bracket 3 championship game thanks to a buzzer-beater by Andy Winters.

Final score of the championship game:   Class of 2009 - 53, Class of 2014 - 51.

A large crowd gathered in Dominican Hall after the games to rehash the day's play, watch games on the big screens, and enjoy pizza, Roosters' wings, and refreshments.

Proceeds from this event fund scholarships to BWHS.

Thanks to all who came out to play or support our alumni basketball players. We look forward to seeing you again next year!

The Alumni Department continues to provide service at St. Lawrence Haven on the second Wednesday of every month. We volunteer from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. On January 7, we prepared and packaged nearly 300 meals.

St. Lawrence Haven is the St. Vincent de Paul-run sack lunch program. The Haven sits behind Holy Cross Church at the corner of Rich and Main Streets downtown. Approximately 300 to 500 meals are served each day. St. Lawrence Haven really appreciates our monthly visits.

                                  Alums speak to Business classes about their careers

The week before finals students in our Marketing classes had guest speakers relate their "real world" experiences to the student's classroom learning.

Guest speakers included Bishop Watterson alumni, parents and supporters of Bishop Watterson High School.

Matt Gill '84, co-owner of the India Oak Restaurant, and George Cleary '86, owner of the Cleary Company, which is a home remodeling business, discussed various aspects of small business ownership.

Tom Benadum, former president of Cross Country Inns, and husband of Patricia Benadum '59, shared his insight as he discussed changes in business since he began his career. The Benadum's had six children graduate from Bishop Watterson; Beth '83, Sarah' 86, Kristin '88, Megan '90, Thomas '95 and Michael '98. In addition the Benadums have 13 grandchildren which have either graduated from Bishop Watterson or will in the future.

                                                       Cleary Mission Trip Shared with Theology Classes

George Cleary '84, left, and daughter Molly, a BWHS senior, spent the day at Bishop Watterson talking to theology classes about their experiences last summer when they visited The Passion Center in Malawi, Africa. The Passion Center serves children orphaned by the AIDS epidemic, providing food, comfort, medical care and a safe place to live in the name of Jesus Christ. October 17, 2014. 7 pm, BWHS Football, 1964 - 50th Reunion,1964 Football Team Reunion at BWHS vs. DeSales Football Game. This year we celebrated the 50th anniversary of the Bishop Watterson vs. St. Francis DeSales football game that resulted in an 8 - 8 tie. This is the only game in the history of this rivalry that resulted in a tie. Players from both teams were recognized before the game at Hagely field on October 17th.

 

Legends Golf Classic - September 7, 2014

A beautiful, sunny afternoon at the Golf Club of Dublin was the setting for our annual Legends Golf Classic on September 7th. More than eighty golfers participated in the event that honors the legacies of Bishop Watterson greats Tom Scholl and Ron Shay. The proceeds from this golf outing are used to provide support for a scholarship to BWHS.

The Alumni Department would like to thank all of the Corporate and Tee sponsors, door prize donors, volunteers, and golfers whose contributions made the success of this event possible!

The 2013 Ron Shay Alumni Basketball Tournament was held on December 29th and  was a great success! A record 17 teams participated in the annual event, which has become a holiday tradition for many alumni.

We crowned champions in three divisions this year.The Class of 2009 ousted the Class of 2011 to win Division III. The Class of 2003 beat the Class of 1993 to win Division II and the Class of 1979 defeated the Class of 1980 to take home the Division I trophy.

New for the 2013 tournament, the Alumni Department hosted a gathering in Dominican Hall following the games. Several alumni stopped by to socialize, watch games on the big screens, and enjoy some pizza and refreshments. If you were not able to join in on the fun this year, we hope to see you next year!

On August 11, 2013, alumni and friends gathered at Bishop Watterson to participate in the second annual O'Connor/Gleich Volleyball Tournament. Named for longtime Eagle volleyball coaches Ginny O'Connor and Chuck Gleich, proceeds from this event will help the Association support its scholarship program for current Watterson students.

2011 Alumni Basketball Tourney Draws 100+ 

Bishop Watterson High School hosted its annual Ron Shay Alumni Basketball in 2011. More than 125 alumni returned to enjoy a day of hoops and camaraderie. The men's teams from the Classes of 1975, 1996, and 2007 emerged victorious in their brackets, while honors for the women's bracket went to the Class of 1994.
