Juvenile Diabetes Walk for the Cure

Saturday, October 3rd

10:00 a.m.

at The Ohio State University (starts in the Parking Lot at Stadium)

Bishop Watterson Football Team and Cheerleaders will be walking to support Juvenile Diabetes and Football Coach Ron Benjamin's daughter,
Riley, (11 years old) and her fight with the disease. We are expecting over 125 walkers. All proceeds raised go to the Foundation.

THE COLUMBUS DISPATCH - High school football: Watterson players walk for Riley, against diabetes - Wednesday,  September 30, 2009 7:18 AM

"It's pretty cool what the players are doing for me by walking and donating money. ... They know how good that makes me feel." — Riley Benjamin

When they received the diagnosis that daughter Riley had type 1 diabetes, Ron and Stephanie Benjamin reacted like most parents.

At first, they were devastated. There would be finger pokes to test blood sugar every two hours. She would have to bolus or inject insulin before every meal and in the middle of the night. There would be a special diet.

After the shock, the Benjamins dug in. They were determined that Riley, who was 8 years old during that traumatic summer of 2007, would live as near normal a life as possible.

Little did the parents or Riley know that they would have quite a team behind them.

Ron, an assistant football coach at Watterson, said the sophomore players began to show an interest in helping Riley.

"The first night of conditioning that year the players told me about what they wanted to do," Benjamin said. "They were genuinely excited."

The players wanted to participate in The Walk To Cure, a 2-mile walk on the Ohio State campus that raises funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

On Sunday the players, who are seniors, will walk a third straight year for Riley and against diabetes beginning at 9 a.m. at Ohio Stadium. They have spread the word to the point where a total of 125 football players, cheerleaders and other Watterson athletes are expected to participate.

The team is called "Riley's Rebels" and will congregate during a tailgate behind a recreational vehicle owned by Stephanie's parents.

"The walk has been a blast," senior receiver and safety Dominic Clegg said. "It's for a good cause, too. Riley is a good girl. She's so positive and outgoing. She's just fun to be around. We like to have her around."

In turn, Riley has turned into a Watterson football pack rat. She'll wave at players during pre-game and cheer them on.

What separates Riley from most fans is the attachment she has with the team. If a player get hurt, she hurts for him.

"It's pretty cool what the players are doing for me by walking and donating money," she said. "I was surprised when they walked. I really liked that. They know how good that makes me feel. I just thank them for everything they've done. I always try to be at their games. I cheered so hard one game that I lost my voice. I'm a big fan."

A graduation requirement at most high schools is that students must fulfill a service project as sophomores.

Watterson players don't view what they are doing for Riley as extra credit. They proudly wear T-shirts designed to bring attention to Riley and diabetes. The Benjamins are major league Notre Dame fans, and they've superimposed Riley's face on top of the Righting Irish leprechaun.

"Our school is a family and we said, 'Let's support the Benjamins,' " tight end and linebacker Matt Schweitzer said. "Coach Benjamin takes care of us, so we can help his family in a small way. We've gotten to know Riley. She supports our team. We support her."

The players have been seen wearing the t-shirts at church festivals, pizza joints, athletic events and even dress-down days at school.

"I've got three or four of the t-shirts, and I wear them everywhere," senior quarterback Greg Hock said. "I like wearing them. You see Riley act as if nothing is wrong. But you know what she goes through every day. That opens your eyes. One day we got pizza, and Riley had to stick herself to check her blood sugar before she could have a slice. We just started eating."

Support also is about getting the word out off campus. One player told former Watterson baseball player Brian DeLucia about Riley, and the result was an Ohio State batting helmet signed by the team.

DeLucia, an infielder for the Buckeyes, arranged for second baseman Cory Kovanda to talk to Riley about living with diabetes. Kovanda has become a star despite being Type 1. He told her that diabetes should never hinder her.

All Watterson players are special to Ron and Stephanie Benjamin. The seniors, though, always will have a spot in their hearts for getting what looks like a tradition started.

"The players are doing this on their own," Ron said. "It's overwhelming. I'm proud because I graduated from Watterson in 1987."

Stephanie said the players stepped forward at the family's darkest hour.

"We were just devastated at the time," she said. "We've received so much support from these boys. Our family appreciates these players so much."

Bump - Set - Spike out Colon Cancer!

Bishop Watterson Girls Volleyball players have designated Tuesday, September 15 as their “Colon Cancer Awareness Game” in honor of the Head Volleyball Coach Chuck Gleich, a colon cancer survivor.

The game was played at BishopWattersonHigh School with Bishop Ready High School beginning at 5:00 with the freshman game and immediately followed by the JV and then the Varsity game. The Watterson Volleyball Players, led by the seniors, have devoted their talents

to create awareness and educate others in the fight against Colon Cancer. The theme of the evening is Colon Cancer Awareness and all

in attendance are encouraged  to wear blue  in support of our fight against Colon Cancer. In addition to distributing educational materials,

the volleyball players will pre-sell T-shirts and conduct a bake sale at lunch and during the match with all proceeds donated to Ohio Health Cancer Awareness Fund in honor of Chuck Gleich where coach has been receiving treatment.

Go Eagles!

Not content to wait for the official start of the school year, Bishop Watterson’s senior leadership team rolled up their sleeves this summer and began to work.  They jumped right in to carry out this year’s school theme, “Shine your light – lead the way,”  said Bishop Watterson Principal Marian Hutson.

Inspired by the leadership retreat they attended late in the spring, the senior leaders have been making plans to help freshman have a smooth transition to high school and to serve the school as well as the larger community.

Left to right:  Hilary Clark, Corinne Fresco, Jack Otte, Kristen Iannarino

After the retreat, senior leaders expressed the desire to encourage others to connect on a deeper level and to celebrate that the Bishop Watterson community is a family. With that in mind, seniors have been developing a program to assist freshman as they get acclimated to life in high school. Senior leaders have been making plans to mentor small groups of freshman throughout the school year.  We want freshman to feel welcome and to know they can come to us if they need help,” said senior leader Emily Vlahakis.  Seniors are also planning community building activities which they will facilitate during freshman orientation.

Service is another important focus for the senior leadership team. In addition to the many hundreds of volunteers hours they contribute on their own, Bishop Watterson senior leaders worked together this summer to plan games and crafts and gathered prizes children for the Summerfest at Run the Race Club.  This is a club on the near Westside which offers free lunch, tutoring and activity time for school children during the summer and a free after school program during the school year.

The senior leaders volunteered at Summerfest, in late July, painting faces, playing football and baggo and ladderball with the children, as well as helping them make crafts.  The prizes were given to children just for participating in the activities.  “It was a wonderful day of meeting really great kids and having fun with them.  It was totally awesome,” said senior leader Sarah Spanski.

Fr. Tony Ricard recently brought a touch of  New Orleans to Bishop Watterson High School.  A nationally known speaker and pastor of Our Lady Star of the Sea in New Orleans, Fr. Ricard challenged students to remember that they were created in God’s image and to live their faith by serving others.

The senior leadership team invited Fr. Ricard to Bishop Watterson after hearing his keynote address during the National Catholic Youth Conference which was held in Columbus in 2007.  Senior leader Molly Vlahakis said, “Father Tony has a special talent of opening teenagers’ eyes to all the possibilities of our faith.   He is able to connect this message of God’s love for us to a more current viewpoint of life.  Seeing Father Tony at NCYC and here at Watterson was a blessing.  He has a way to make you laugh.  He just has a carefree way of getting you to feel comfortable.  His method is different than a Sunday sermon, but his message is still true and heartfelt.”

Fr. Ricard shared with students the ongoing struggle of his parish and parish community to recover after Hurricane Katrina.  He stressed how important it has been for Our Lady Star of the Sea to call people who lived in the neighborhood back to community.  There have been many struggles, Fr. Ricard said, as they have worked to rebuild their parish, their community and their lives.  Bishop Watterson students are raising funds to benefit the parish in their recovery.

Player Spotlight, Anthony Randolph - espn.com April 21, 2009 By Christine Jinbo

Anthony Randolph of Bishop Watterson (Columbus, Ohio) High School received this week's honor as the player spotlight of the week for ESPN RISE Volleyball.  So far this season, the 6-foot-5 senior's all around play contributed to an impressive stat list. In his first five matches, Randolph collected: 76 kills, 15.2 kills per match average, .406 kill percentage, 14 aces, 26 blocks, 55 digs and 97 percent passing accuracy.

Bishop Watterson Head Coach Larry Worth stresses the importance of leadership with Randolph.

Courtesy Bishop Watterson -Larry Worth

IPFW bound Anthony Randolph goes for the angle kill.

"We talk a lot about leaving your legacy through those you lead, rather than the stats you produce.  He has really latched onto this belief."  Worth continued, "Through becoming more passionate about this leadership, his overall performance on the court has really gone to the next level."  Last year as a junior, Randolph received first team all-state honors and East Region Central Ohio Player of the Year as well as being selected the team MVP.

Randolph began playing volleyball in sixth grade.  "My older brothers played and got me into it," said Randolph
.

The 6-foot-5 outside hitter committed to play at Indiana University–Purdue University Fort Wayne (IPFW) and follow in his brother Mike's footsteps.

The IPFW bound senior reflected on his goals and influences and continued, "I want to be the best player possible.  My brothers and high school coach inspire me to work hard to accomplish my goals."

When Randolph looked into schools for college he kept it all in the family.

"My brother (Mike) played at IPFW a few years ago.  I was looking into many different schools to play, when Mike talked to the coaches at IPFW. I visited campus and I loved it!  I made my decision that weekend."

Randolph's impact as a player."It has been a pleasure to witness Anthony mature into the player and person he is today.  What impresses me the most about Anthony, this season, is his  transformation into the leader his team needs him to be."

ESPN RISE Volleyball started the sentence and Randolph completed it.
I play best... in close matches and against strong competition.

If I were coaching this team... I would want my team to be defensively sound.

The best thing about volleyball... is the energy that goes through you while playing.

Something most people don't know about me is... I had my appendix out in 7th grade.  The doctor said if I waited one more week I could have died.

The topical issue that most interests me in the world is... how Obama is going to turn our country around.

If I could have one superhuman power it would be ... the ability to fly.

Three Watterson students awarded summer language scholarships

Three Watterson students have been awarded full scholarships to the 2008 Ohio Board of Regents Foreign Language Academy.  Junior Elizabeth "Betsy" Pillion will study Japanese and juniors Sophia Bachman and Evan Wagstaff will study Russian for four weeks this summer at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio.  They will then attend a monthly Saturday session throughout the coming school year.   Watterson was among a few high schools in the state, and the only high school in the Columbus area, to have had three students selected for the prestigious program.  Currently,  Ms. Pillion is in her third year of studying French with Watterson teacher, Mr. Jim Dury.  Ms. Bachman and Mr. Wagstaff are students in Ms. Colleen Summanen's Honors Spanish IV class.

Both the summer academy and follow up academic year sessions are at no cost to students and their families. The Academy will provide for tuition, room, board, admission fees and textbooks. The program also provides a summer stipend (earn while learning) and the use of a laptop for the 11-month period of the Academy.

The summer academy requires a five-day a week residence for four weeks in a language house at Kent State.  There the students will have daily classes followed by evening immersion experiences where they will be exposed to Japanese or Russian film, games, music, cuisine and conversation.  Speakers, including professionals who use foreign languages in their careers, are scheduled to make presentations during some evening sessions.  At the end of the program, these three students will have gained eight college credits, the equivalent of studying their chosen language for two years.

Students were featured on Daytime Columbus for organizing a drive to
collect prom dresses to give to those who are unable to afford one.

Prom dresses were donated to Fairy Goodmothers. The students collected the dresses, which had to be in good repair and in recent style.  They were donated to Fairy Goodmothers, a local organization that distributes the dresses to young ladies who cannot afford dresses for prom.  (This is patterned after an organization in Chicago, but Fairy Goodmothers is only in Columbus.)  They collect from churches and other groups to find dresses for girls.  Watterson mother, Tracy McAllister, works with the group and also appeared on the show, to talk about the efforts of Fairy Goodmothers and their mission. Two Saturdays in April the dresses are handed out at the Cinderella Boutique in Worthington Square Mall.

FILL UP THE TRUCK FRIDAYS!
For the past seven years we have had students serve at the Holy Family Soup  Kitchen and Pantry.  Seeing the empty cupboards and shelves at Holy    Family along with hearing daily news of those struggling in this economy has  caught the attention of our students. Feeling called to make a difference, our seniors and juniors will be working during Lent to engage the entire school in a plan to help fill up food pantries in Columbus.

Each Friday during Lent students will participate in "Fill Up Fridays." Two different students will park their pick-up trucks by the gym lobby entrance where students can deposit food donations as they enter school.  In an effort to engage help with the food drive, the students will create teams and seek support from others in their parish, classes, activities, clubs and sports teams.

This past week the competition was between Senior Caroline Conte's PINK TEAM "versus"  Senior Drew Sabula's GREEN TEAM.  Under the supervision of Mrs. Barb Sauter, the food will be delivered each Friday to a selected pantry.  Our first delivery went to the Holy Family Soup Kitchen and Pantry.

The images of empty shelves and hungry faces at the Holy Family food pantry and soup kitchen stayed with a group of Bishop Watterson students even after their service for the day ended. Unable to forget the images of hunger and hurting, the students decided to do something to help fill the shelves of area food pantries.

Junior Ruby Burchfield asked her friends for canned goods rather than gifts when she recently celebrated her birthday.  Those cans, along with thousands of other cans and non-perishables, have been donated by Bishop Watterson students in recent weeks to area food pantries.  Working with the guidance of Service Director Barb Sauter, senior theology teacher Beth Simmonds, and school chaplain Deacon Frank Iannarino,  students have created a campaign titled “Fill-Up Fridays” during Lent.

Students are collecting food in their neighborhoods and parish communities as they seek to top totals from past weeks.  Friday, April 3 will be the final collection and delivery day of the five-week project.  During five Fridays in Lent students are engaging in a good natured competition to fill up the trucks of student volunteers.  Each week two or three different students have volunteered their trucks and recruited a team of volunteers to help them fill up their trucks with canned and non perishable food items.  Each team is assigned a distinct color which is evident in posters around the school as well as pieces of yarn tied around students’ wrists. The yarn serves as a reminder of the commitment to bring food on Friday for their team. Through the Lenten season 14 student teams are competing for the most food items collected, however, they recognize that the real winners are those who will benefit from the food collected.

During the first four weeks of the drive, students have delivered more than 6,000 nonperishable food items to Holy Family soup kitchen and food pantry, St. Vincent de Paul/J.O.I.N., Community Kitchen and the Guadalupe Center.  In this final week of the drive, students will deliver the food to Second Harvest Foodbank of Southeastern Ohio.  Within the past year, five area companies have closed and unemployment in the area is more than 25 percent.  The food bank is expecting to provide food to 2,500 people on April 4, said outreach coordinator Marilyn Sloan.

The student’s response to “Fill Up Fridays” has been wonderful, said Mrs. Sauter.  Through volunteering at the food pantry and soup kitchen, they have seen the need first hand and are now calling their classmates and the community to join them n making a difference, she said.

SNP's Spring Athletes of the Year 2009 By:  SETH SHANER Published: Thursday, June 25, 2009 Editor's Note: Three times a year, the sports staff at Suburban News Publications names its Players of the Year for the just-completed high school season. There were dozens of deserving choices, all with strong arguments in their favor. The voting process has spoken, and here are the final selections for spring SNP Athletes of the Year, 2009.

Volleyball -- Anthony Randolph -- Watterson

There isn't much more that can be said about Watterson senior volleyball standout Anthony Randolph that his coach, Larry Worth, said following the recent season.

"He's the best
Ohio has to offer," Worth said. "We've been blessed to have him in our program the past three years.

"Not many programs have a guy like that come through the ranks, and he definitely impacted everything we did the past four years."

The honors
Randolph earned in his final season tell the tale.

Randolph was voted state player of the year in Division II, which "pretty much everybody and his brother knew he was going to get," said Worth.
